A warm welcome to the 144th German Surgical Congress.

Here you’ll find all the information about the conference in Munich.

Prof. Jens Werner, M.D.

Dear colleagues,
dear students, nursing staff, and emergency medical services personnel,

A warm welcome to the 2027 German Surgical Congress in Munich. Together with the presidents of our member societies, our affiliated professional societies, and all of you, we would like to organize a congress that combines scientific exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and personal dialogue.

Healthcare professions—and surgery in particular—are fascinating, meaningful, and fulfilling careers. It is precisely this awareness that should motivate us to address the diverse challenges of our time—and especially the far-reaching changes in the healthcare system—with a sense of responsibility and a commitment to shaping the future…

Resilience – acta non verba. This motto of the DCK 2027 stands for far more than the resilience of our profession that is so often called for. We must not only cope with upheavals in health policy and societal crises, but also actively shape them so that we emerge from them stronger. In this context, resilience also means responsibly guiding processes of change, helping to develop new structures, and consistently upholding our core values—quality, patient safety, and medical responsibility. We must not merely comment on reforms; we must actively shape them with our professional expertise and our shared commitment. As a surgical professional association with well over 20,000 members, we bear responsibility for this and, at the same time, possess the expertise and strength to help shape these developments constructively and with a clear stance.

I am particularly pleased that the 2027 DGCH Annual Congress will be held in conjunction with the annual meetings of the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV) and the German Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Surgery (DGKJCH), as well as the spring meeting of the German Society for Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery (DGPRÄC). Together with the Professional Association of German Surgeons (BDC) and representatives from nursing and emergency medical services, we are creating a congress that focuses on interdisciplinary exchange. This close collaboration across disciplinary and professional boundaries makes the DCK an important platform for the further development of our field.

Especially in this era of increasing specialization, the DCK’s particular strength lies in interdisciplinary dialogue. Interdisciplinary meetings and joint events with our partner disciplines—anesthesiology and critical care medicine, as well as internal medicine and pathology—create the space to collaboratively advance key topics in our field. These include perioperative medicine, critical care and emergency medicine, and surgical research, as well as professional policy issues—such as minimum staffing levels and the working conditions of young surgeons.

At the same time, DCK 2027 will maintain a firm focus on the future. Technological developments such as robotics and artificial intelligence will play a central role in the scientific program. Other key areas of focus include oncological surgery and transplant surgery—fields currently characterized by extraordinary momentum in both pharmacological and surgical innovation. In light of global political uncertainties, topics such as crisis management, defense preparedness, civil security, and capacity bottlenecks will also be discussed. With the Bundeswehr’s renewed participation in DCK 2027, we also aim to highlight that it is an integral part of the healthcare and supply system as well as our society.

The future and continued development of our field lie in the hands of the next generation of medical professionals. That is why the education, training, and support of our next generation of surgeons—including students—are among our most important tasks. It is our shared goal to inspire young colleagues to pursue a career in surgery, to support them on their professional journey, and to offer them reliable career prospects. Accordingly, the promotion of young talent will be a special focus of the congress.

The tried-and-true supporting program will also provide opportunities for networking and personal interaction. I look forward to welcoming you to the traditional DGCH Organ Donation Run and the social evening at the Augustinerkeller in Munich. These events will enrich the DCK 2027 in Munich in a special way and provide an opportunity to engage in conversation with one another beyond the scientific sessions.

As in previous years, the main conference will once again be preceded by DCK.digital (April 13–15, 2027). This format offers early-career researchers, in particular, the opportunity to present current research findings to a broad audience, engage in scholarly discussion, and build new networks.

In 2027, we will welcome a special guest country: Italy. International scientific exchange has enriched our conference for many years and opened up new perspectives for research, teaching, and clinical collaboration. I am therefore all the more delighted to welcome numerous colleagues from Italy—both online and in person in Munich.

I am very pleased to welcome you in person to Munich, together with my team and the presidents of the DGCH member societies. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a stimulating conference experience filled with exciting scientific discussions, new insights, and many valuable encounters.

With warm regards from our colleagues,
Jens Werner

With this year’s conference theme, “Resilience—Acta non Verba,” we are highlighting the inner strength of our profession—which we demonstrate every day through our care for our youngest patients!

Our resilience is currently being put to the test. The political and structural situation in pediatric medicine and pediatric surgery is currently tense. We are calling for an urgent rethinking of health policy, as the structural conditions are increasingly jeopardizing the availability of high-quality, locally accessible care for our youngest patients. We face funding shortfalls in pediatric care due to high standby costs and inadequate flat-rate case-based reimbursement. We are facing an investment backlog, which prevents urgently needed structural adjustments from being implemented. Furthermore, the working conditions and training of our next generation of pediatric surgeons must be adapted to the current times and optimized.

We must speak out more forcefully and actively draw attention to the underfunding of highly specialized pediatric surgical centers, which makes our daily work more difficult. We need a fully funded, high-quality cost structure that is not based solely on economic flat-rate payments per case!

Resilience—Acta non Verba is the perfect symbol for this: You, dear colleagues, demonstrate tremendous resilience every single day. Despite staffing shortages, political uncertainty, and the high emotional strain of caring for sick children and their families, you do not let yourselves be discouraged—instead, you let your actions speak for themselves!

This conference is intended not only to serve as a platform for scientific and collegial exchange, but also to provide opportunities for you to share your personal experiences. We hope you enjoy inspiring presentations, stimulating discussions, and, of course, a wonderful time at the 2027 German Surgical Congress!

Please accept a warm welcome to Munich, especially on behalf of the President of the DGCH, Prof. Dr. med. Jens Werner, and the President of the German Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Surgery, Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Guido Seitz.

With warm regards,

,Prof. Dr. med. Vera Schellerer

Message from the DGAV

Dear Colleagues, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my great pleasure, on behalf of the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV), to welcome you to the 144th German Surgical Congress in Munich in 2027.

As a scientific professional association, the DGAV represents the full spectrum of general and visceral surgery. It supports the ongoing advancement of our field through research, the development of clinical guidelines, quality assurance, education, training, and continuing professional development, as well as the promotion of young scientists. At the same time, it sees itself as the voice of a surgical field that combines innovation with responsibility and is consistently guided by the needs of our patients.

The German Surgical Congress offers the ideal platform to highlight this diversity. General surgery forms the foundation of comprehensive surgical care and plays a central role in emergency care as well as in the treatment of common surgical conditions. At the same time, visceral surgery is evolving at a rapid pace—from minimally invasive and robotic surgery to surgical oncology and highly complex reconstructive procedures. These two fields are inextricably linked and are equally represented and advanced by the DGAV.

The conference theme , “Resilience – Acta non Verba,” aptly describes the challenges of our time. For us, resilience means not only the ability to cope with stress in both our personal and professional lives, but also the capacity to take on responsibility even under changing circumstances, to translate scientific findings into clinical practice, and to work together to develop sustainable solutions for the future of surgery.

Our field is undergoing profound change. Demographic shifts, new hospital structures, the shift toward outpatient care, digitalization, robotics, and artificial intelligence are opening up new possibilities, but they also present us with new challenges. As the DGAV, we want to play an active role in shaping these developments—in a scientifically sound, quality-oriented manner, and always with a focus on the benefit to our patients.

At the DGAV meetings and the interdisciplinary sessions of the DCK 2027, you can expect the latest scientific findings, innovative surgical techniques, practical case discussions, video presentations, and pro-and-con debates. Equally important to us is the exchange of ideas regarding continuing education, the promotion of young professionals, and the future of our profession. Good surgery requires excellent training, reliable structures, and dedicated individuals who are willing to take on responsibility.

Trust, interaction, and personal, collegial exchanges are especially important in times of change.

I am looking forward to an exciting and interactive DCK 2027 that reflects the diversity and capabilities of surgery, promotes interdisciplinary exchange, and provides new impetus for research, clinical care, and continuing education.

Together with the entire conference team, I look forward to welcoming you to Munich in April 2027.

With warm regards,

Prof. Dr. med., Dr. h.c. mult. Tobias Keck
